was an American abolitionist, women’s suffragist, editor, orator,
author, statesman and reformer.  In 1872, Douglass became the very first African-American nominated as a Vice Presidential candidate.

Booker Taliaferro Washington was an educator, orator, author and leader of the African-American community. He was freed from slavery as a child then earned his way through an education at Hampton Institute and Wayland Seminary. He was appointed as the first leader of the new Tuskegee Institute, then a teachers’ college for blacks.
